View RecordsUse Utah Xchange for a public criminal case or choose BCI’s own-history process, with search charges, court coverage, and practical document follow-through.
A Utah criminal-record request can mean a public court case, a copy of an order, or your own state criminal-history report. Xchange covers public District and Justice Court case information; BCI’s Right of Access is a separate process for your own Utah history. A nationwide personal record has a further FBI route linked by BCI. Ask the receiving organization which product and certification it requires before choosing a service.
Xchange’s District Court records include felonies and class A misdemeanors; Justice Courts handle most class B/C misdemeanors, infractions and traffic matters. Search by defendant name or a known case number, then narrow by county, court location, case type or dates. Case and citation numbers are not unique statewide, so retain the court with the number when you identify the proceeding.
Use a first-name wildcard when a middle name or initial may be blocking a match, but check the returned defendant details. Examine charge, plea and disposition together. A pending allegation and a dismissed count are different outcomes even within one case. When a summary cannot answer the outcome question, obtain the actual public order rather than relying on its short event label.
Occasional Xchange use starts at $10, with $0.35 deducted for each search and $1 for each document. A one-time-use account can preserve remaining credit; guest access forfeits unused credit. A monthly account costs $25 to establish and $40 a month, includes 500 searches, then charges $0.35 per extra search and $1 per document. Each submitted search is chargeable, so prepare the criteria first.
For monthly access, send the completed Subscription Agreement to [email protected]. The court says setup instructions usually arrive within 48 business hours after approval. Subscription cancellation is requested at that email address. If you only need courthouse access, public Xchange terminals are available at many District Court locations; verify local availability before travelling.
Xchange offers public District Court documents available electronically and filed since July 1, 2010. Ask the handling clerk about a missing or certified document; paying $1 for an available image does not certify it. Restricted, sealed, expunged and juvenile matters are outside public Xchange, and older converted cases may contain less detail. Federal charges require the federal court system.
BCI charges $20 for Right of Access under its current fee notice. Apply at 4315 South 2700 West, Suite 1300, Taylorsville, UT 84129, or use the Criminal History Record Application linked from its own-record page and mail it with the required fee. For an in-person request, bring valid government-issued picture identification; a Utah Driving Privilege Card is not accepted. The office is open weekdays, 8 a.m.–5 p.m., excluding state holidays.
The own-record page accepts cash, personal check, Visa or MasterCard, money order or cashier’s check for in-person service. Follow the current application’s identity-verification instructions for mail rather than sending an informal name-only request. Contact 801-965-4445 about your request, the required report format and delivery timing. The reviewed service page does not promise a fixed mail-processing deadline or a universally certified product.
MyCourtCase provides free history and filed-paper access for supported case parties and eligible criminal-case victims. Sign-up requires an email address, case number and government-issued ID. A researcher seeking other people’s public cases should use Xchange. Having a MyCourtCase account is not permission to view unrelated private files, and party access does not replace the BCI report a recipient specifically requested.
For incorrect Xchange information, contact the clerk where the case was filed with its number and the exact entry. For your own repository history, BCI separately lists a $20 Record Challenge Request; ask BCI for that procedure and identify the arrest or disposition in dispute. A court-data correction and a repository challenge are different requests, so keep the supporting court document with the report you are challenging.
A useful search record includes the service used, date, court and case identifiers, document reviewed and any unresolved gap. A public no-match can reflect restricted coverage, older records or mismatched search inputs. A BCI personal report is Utah history rather than a promise about every federal or out-of-state proceeding. Keep those limits visible when deciding whether another specifically required record remains to be obtained.
